QuickBooks Online Review: Features, pricing, and more

QuickBooks has an accounting tool specifically for freelancers called QuickBooks Online Self-Employed, which starts at $15 a month. QuickBooks Self-Employed tackles basic freelance bookkeeping features like expense tracking, receipt uploading, tax categorizing, quarterly tax estimating and mileage tracking. If you’re a freelancer, stick with its Self-Employed plan, which is $15 per month 9after the three-month discount at $7.50). Features include mileage tracking, basic reporting, income and expense tracking, capture and organize receipts and estimation of quarterly taxes.

For instance, while the navigation and exact screens might be different, the basic steps of doing things like managing undeposited funds, issuing invoicing, paying bills, and tracking inventory are the same. QuickBooks offers more — and better — reports than nearly any other accounting business startup costs: it’s within the details software provider. With the Simple Start plan, QuickBooks’ software will generate cash flow statements, income statements and balance sheets. Users can also use it to create customized tags and reports that help you hone in on specific income and expense trends and up your business’s cash flow. Higher-tier plans include more thorough reports and in-depth insights, including profitability reports, extended forecasting and inventory reports. QuickBooks Online’s monthly pricing runs from $35 to $235, depending on the number of users and features that your company needs. That said, if you really don’t need the advanced features or additional users, Simple Start is an outstanding value.

But if you can afford QuickBooks’ cost, its excellent features will help you keep your finances in line as you grow from startup to fully fledged enterprise. The most notable difference, aside from price, between QuickBooks Online and QuickBooks Desktop is the Online version is cloud-based. The mobile app for Online is robust, and Desktop’s mobile app is so limited, that it essentially functions as a receipt uploader. Working from the cloud means you need an internet connection, so a poor signal or an intermittent connection can be an issue. Speaking for myself—a CPA with 29 years of experience—yes, I like QuickBooks Online for small business users. It’s designed for business owners and non-professional bookkeepers.

  3. Via QuickBooks Payments, which is included free (apart from industry-standard transaction fees) with each plan, users can also configure invoices to accept online bank transfers and credit card payments.
  4. QuickBooks Online Essentials does everything that Simple Start will do and adds the ability to manage bills and track time.
  5. Features include mileage tracking, basic reporting, income and expense tracking, capture and organize receipts and estimation of quarterly taxes.

For basic inventory features, we looked for the ability to track units, per-unit costs (using either FIFO or average cost), and the automatic recording of COGS upon a sale. Advanced features included the ability to adjust inventory on hand for shrinkage with an automatic expense recorded and the option to choose from either FIFO or average cost to value inventory. IOS users awarded the QuickBooks Online mobile app 4.7 out of 5 stars, while Android users gave it only 3.9 out of 5 stars. The only thing missing from how to make money writing QuickBooks’ sales tax feature is the ability to actually electronically file the sales tax return directly from the program. I really like the banking features in QuickBooks Online because they are well suited to both businesses that issue a lot of paper checks and businesses that like to pay all their bills electronically.

If you make the switch from Desktop to Online, you can import your data and access your original company file at any time. For $27.50 per month for the first three months, then $55 per month after that, get up to three users, manage accounting careers and pay bills and track time with its Essentials plan, which is its most popular plan. In addition to the basics of issuing invoices and collecting customer payments, we evaluated the software’s ability to create customized invoices. We also assessed whether it could handle non-routine transactions like short payments, credit memos, and the refund of credit balances in customer accounts.

Small businesses can customize how they use the platform so that they only use the features they need. Another cumbersome feature that users don’t like is the requirement that clients must establish their own accounts to pay an invoice. Other popular merchant processors don’t require this, making collecting payments more difficult.
